As he nears the end of his life He will see her face In every flower Growing through the cracks Of a secret walkway That takes him back, back, back, back, back To the enamoured door Of his all-consuming art He'll recall his vacant affection; his narcisstic neglection Of her love And then he'll stumble and fumble for his keys As she looks inside him, and sees The same old husk of a heart

I need to get back to Killdeer Ridge And let the trees throw shade at my darkness The leaves of my mind are falling still Like monarch wings on a radiator grill Last July the west wind broke free And went on a boredom killing spree I took shelter in the valley below And thought about the things that have laid me low I thought about the things that have laid me low The year before that it was me and you We sat up high and drank a few You took a look at the sky of my mind And drew up constellation lines Perseus and the Northern Crown Then you drew yourself down in the ground And when I asked if it was true Well you just gave me that look I knew You just gave me that look I knew I need to get back to Killdeer Ridge And let the trees throw shade at my darkness The leaves of my mind are falling still Like monarch wings on a radiator grill Monarch wings on a radiator grill

Life is a Halloween candy apple on the evening news The one that put the razor blade in the mouth of Little Boy Blue Who just last year found out he was dying Little Boy Blue come blow your horn The sheep's in the meadow The cow's in the corn Life is a Halloween piñata on the evening news The one that blew up in the sweet trusting face of Little Bo Peep Who lost her family in a tenement fire Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep and can't tell where to find them Life is a Halloween garden party on the evening news The one crashed by the gun crazed father of Mary: a child in the crossfire of divorce Mary Mary Quite Contrary How does your garden grow? Life plays out like a nursery rhyme People get hurt all the time There' only so much Anyone can do Life plays out like a nursery rhyme People get screwed all the time There's only so much Anyone can do On and on the trouble goes Where it stops Nobody knows Maybe it'll stop in the parking lot... Yeah, maybe it'll stop in the parking lot That was made when they paved Paradise

Tomorrow on my way to work I'm gonna need to keep my feet warm They're calling for freezing rain And it's a long commute But at least I get paid for my travel time I really need the money And if my feet get cold I don't know what I'll do When it happened last I was on a roof I've never been good with heights I guess I shouldn't lie in my interviews But that's just the way it's done around here Where the hay doesn't see the sun Anyway, the roof was four storeys high High enough for me to see the future High enough for me to see an old man on a bench Thinking of his past And all the years that he cashed Like so many paychecks He was hunched over and alone And when he turned his head he fixed me With an eviscerating stare That made me dizzy My feet went cold inside my boots As I made my way down from the roof But today is always louder than the future So I fixed my car and took another job And now I'm looking at a long commute Down a winding graveyard of a highway But at least I get paid for my travel time At least I get paid for my travel time At least I get paid for my travel time At least I get paid

David gathered what he could And drove down to the bank Smiled wanly at the teller And withdrew all his cash He was an amateur astronomer Tracking an NEA For the better part of a month He was sure that what he found Wasn't just a city destroyer Or a continental killer It was a civilization ender The catastrophic implications Of his discovery Started messing with his mind And it wasn't very long Before he became An unhinged alcoholic With nothing left to lose So there he was down at the bank Staring into Christine's eyes She was a very pretty teller And patient too And a little naive And at times Perfectly spontaneous As Christine counted David's cash Which was about a hundred grand David launched into the story Of the civilization ender That he aptly named Goliath And Christine took every word At face value The look of shock in her eyes Strengthened his resolve And he asked her if she might like To see the ancient ruins of Europe In the time They had left Christine was single in a job that was unfulfilling And she'd never been overseas So with all things considered, she said, "Yes." And then she said, "Please, take me to Paris." "And then take me to Greece. And everywhere in between." David stuffed the cash into a satchel As Christine grabbed her things And even though Goliath was a flyby They still found their way To the ancient side of love They still found their way To the ancient side of love They still found their way To the ancient Side of love

The bleeding edge of reason Delineates the lines Reason is a razor And then her eyes invade my mind War-torn eyes Impossible eyes And all at once I know Exactly what I need to say She is my cocaine She slams into my brain Just the same Life is a writer Pissing on my grave Laughing at the epitaph Underneath my name "Paradise birds were to blame'" For unavoidable mistakes Unforgettable mistakes Mistakes that always run Through the blue gutters Of my veins She is my cocaine She slams into my brain Just the same Her mind is undiscovered; a temple in the jungle Pine resin burns upon the steps As shadows dance to castanets She calls me in And I go in And there she is Bathed in a violet flame She is my cocaine She rambles through my brain She slams into my brain She rambles through my brain She slams into my brain Just the same

All summer long his sails were full Of her charms and affection And with a red sky every night He moved along in her direction Toward those western lands That she whispered of so fondly When he found himself weakened By the sea's volatilities He relied upon the words She strung together like pearls Words that kept him warm Like whiskey When the nights grew cold And it rained the tears of an albatross Perched upon a makeshift cross That held a ragged sail, woven With his hopes and dreams As winter made an entrance Without the promise of spring Without the promise of anything at all But the big sleep So he laid himself down And looked above his naked feet To where the western lands were soon to be Rippling in the distance Like a highway, rippling in the heat And then he closed his eyes At the frozen sky As a voice came sweetly singing A lullaby With words Murmured so soft: Meet me at the jubilee Where the music plays endlessly And together we can revel, revel, revel Ourselves free Meet me at the jubilee Where the music plays endlessly And together we can revel, revel, revel Ourselves free
